BEDAWI offers you a stay in Dahab, an attractive beachtown in South Sinai. Dahab is located 100 kilometres north east of Sharm el Sheikh on the Gulf of Aqaba. This is a one hour drive by car.
Dahab means gold in Arabic and points to the golden sand in and around Dahab.
Dahab draws people from all over the world. It found fame in the 1960's as a hippie haven, as it was a popular stopover on the backpacking trail across Egypt and Israel. Dahab has since grown into a touristic centre with not just camps and beach restaurants but with good hotel facilities, bars and bazars. However, unlike Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab still retains a relaxed and laid back atmosphere today.
Dahab is unique because the Mzeina Bedouin tribe reside in the tourist area. A fondness of the place grows on you when you stay here and most people decide to come back for more holidays or stay long term which has created an interesting fusion of cultures.
Dahab used to be a fishing village and it is still small enough to get around by foot. Tourism development in Dahab is growing fast, which has its impact on the town but nevertheless Dahab is still known for her rustic, easy going character. It was included in the BBC series and book 'Unforgettable Things To Do Before You Die' and regularly features on Top Ten lists of Must-See places in the world.
The centre of Dahab is surveyable and sociable with lots of small shops and restaurants, offering international and local dishes at reasonable prices, along the promenade where globetrotters meet in a lively sphere.
Many of the restaurants along the promenade are still a mix of the former hippy- and Bedouin style where the food is served on low tables and where you sit in low seats close to the sea.
At the fish-restaurants you can choose your fresh fish and have it prepared the way you wish. After your meal you can lay back and stay as long as you want.
During the daytime this area is good for relaxing, eating and shopping.
By night its transformed into a place where people meet, eat, drink and move on to one of the many bars in the area to enjoy the nightlife of Dahab.
In the middle of the centre you can find a small bridge. The area north of the bridge is called Masbat and the area south of the bridge is called Mashraba. Together these areas form the main town centre.
The relaxed pace of Dahab is catching and makes you want to stay...
Dahab is famous for diving, snorkeling and windsurfing and more over it is the perfect place from which you can start your safari in to the desert and the High Mountains of Sinai.
Dahab consists of 2 bay areas:
Ghazala Bay
This is the most developed part of Dahab and the original Bedouin village El Assalah is located here. It is a lively area but still rustic and stretches up along the coast north from the Lighthouse, Dahab's busiest dive site.
It is lovely to walk along the coast if you fancy a little exploration and want to see some of the real Dahab. The coast line contains small hotels, guest houses, restaurants and further north you find private homes and unspoilt beach.
If you go inland from the beach you will find yourself in the Bedouin village, which has started to become more developed. Here you still see goats and camels roaming freely, traditional houses, children playing and the typical Bedouin lifestyle.
In El Qura bay you can find more luxureous holiday villages and dive centres that attract different types of guests. Dahab City is inwards of the coast and it is the main administrative centre where the hospital, the modern decompression chambers for divers, bus station and council offices are based.
The Lagoona is a long stretch of golden sand. It is a beautiful spot and a must for a visit, even if only to sit or picnic and relax while you admire the view. This is not just the best spot in Dahab for kite- and windsurfing where all the schools are based, but there are also several dive sites in this area.
After Dahab City, just a litlle bit further, the road will take south to the area of Wadi Gnai. This less developed area is great for diving, snorkeling and for daytrips or overnight trips.
Bedouin camps are built along the beach where you can hang out and let the day drift by or you visit here the diving spot Moray Gardens.
Whilst this area is busy during the day time, once the sun sets the place is a quiet desert and sea haven.
